Biomimetic dentistry

We’re very proud of the work we do with the Geelong community, and we’re also very proud that we’re on the cutting edge of dentistry here at the Myers Street clinic.

One such innovation is our undertaking the process known as biomimetic dentistry.

The word ‘biomimetic’ has its roots in ‘bio’, meaning ‘life’, and ‘mimic’, meaning ‘duplicate’. Biomimetic dentistry is the art of restoring any failing tooth to its original lifelike form. It involves us being conservative in our approach, removing only the weakened part of the tooth, replacing, and bonding it with either composite or porcelain.

By imitating, or duplicating the natural structures of your teeth, as well as how it bends and operates, the process helps us provide a natural solution to many concerns you have inside your mouth.

It’s something which regains teeth which have lost their form, structure and colour.

Years of experience and research have shown us that what is ultimately best for a tooth is to restore it as closely to its original properties as we can. There are different ways to go about this, but it often boils down to doing a conservative restoration that involves a combination of approaches and tools.

An example of biomimetic dentistry is the transition from conventional, full coverage crowns to minimally invasive crowns, which only replace the tooth’s weakened enamel. This is possible using our 3D scanner and our 3D milling machine, allowing us to fabricate these porcelain restorations on the same day.

Hybrid layers provide up to a 400% increase in bond strength, making fillings as strong as natural teeth. This strong bond allows the biomimetically-enhanced teeth to look and function like natural teeth. With biomimetically-enhanced teeth, you can chew without causing residual stress. The seal we use prevents cracks for the long-term, lessening the development of bacterial infections. It minimizes the need for future bridges, implants, root canals, and tooth extractions by up to 90%.

Anyone who has undergone an invasive oral procedure can understand the anxiety that traditional dentistry can cause. But you’ll find biomimetic dentistry is a more natural, preventative approach which can dramatically reduce the need to remove teeth or grind them down for crowns, root canals, and other procedures. It takes a ‘less is more’ approach, meaning that problems are corrected through a minimalist, less invasive, non-toxic treatment rather than grinding or removing teeth before it is absolutely necessary.

We’re doing all we can to make your next visit to the dentist chair as pleasant as possible.
